Tamuka Hub is a computer centre, a classroom, an internet-access point, a social space, a venue for self-study, and much more. It is located at:

Kivuli Centre, Kabiria Road, Riruta/Satellite, Nairobi.

To get there take the 4W bus from town/Ngong Road, alight at the end of the line, and walk 5 minutes to the Kivuli Centre.

Courses offered include:

  • Introduction to Computers (including options for mixed and women-only classes)
  • Money Management for Business
  • Personal Career Development

To sign up for a course, come and visit us.

Our computers run Edubuntu, a GNU/Linux based operating system with its own built-in suite of educational software, from typing tutors and arithmetic quizzes to CAD software and space simulators. Other learning materials include Khan Academy videos (in English, soon to be joined with a Swahili set) and an offline version of Wikipedia.

The Hub isn’t just a place, it is also a program that we hope to develop and expand in coming years. Nairobi is a very big city, and not only is transport relatively expensive and time-consuming, some refugees may not feel safe taking public transport in the first place. To reach as many people as possible we plan to open satellite hubs at various locations around Nairobi, based in existing Community Centres or cyber cafes. The satellite hubs will host all the educational content of our Kivuli Centre hub, and will have a far lower hardware footprint – we plan to use existing machines or cheap tablets.
